Why Are You Grinding Your Teeth?

Tooth grinding is an pleasant and unproductive activity.

I have no doubt that it has its origins in stress.

Bruxism, as it is also known, involves gnawing, gnashing and grinding your teeth.

Silly thing to do, isn’t it?

I’ve become quite adept at Clenching and Grinding.

I take my stress from the day and unconsciously apply it to my jaw at night.

This is not good.

Except if it prompts you to race for stress relieving tools.

Stop It!

An immediate remedy is to get a night guard.

A night guard is an essential defence against uncontrolled, unconscious distress and subsequent jaw overdrive.

And a good way to keep your teeth.

Yes, rampant grinding can affect vulnerable teeth.

I’m sure this explains my recent dental crisis, due, in large part, to placing my night guard in its shiny case, in a drawer, instead of wearing it.

Listen for it: Craaa-ck.

Bad decision.

 

How To Calm a Busy Jaw

  • Don’t pay lip service to stress relieving strategies. Use them. See if they minimize your grinding habit. See the reading recommendation, below.
  • Be diligent about the amount of salt, sugar and food chemicals you ingest before bedtime. Better still, avoid them before bedtime. They excite and activate the mind. Cause wakefulness. And surely awaken the jaw.
  • Visit the dentist to assess if your jaw is working properly; grinding is sometimes associated with improper alignment of the chops.
  • Try acupuncture. Acupuncture for tooth grinding has in some cases been found to reduce tension in the jaw and relax the body overall.
  • Avoid chewing gum.
  • Try home remedies, which may include applying ice packs to the area.
  • Learn techniques which involve massaging the jaw and neck, along with gentle stretches, for both.
  • Do not engage in drama several hours before bedtime. That means no loud arguments, no terrifying nightly news, no heated political, religious (or other) discussions with your spouse, unruly teenagers, or nasty neighbours.
  • Turn off your gadgets. They stimulate, provoke, and demand engagement. Excitable engagement is not productive if you want a calm sleep.
  • Slow down before bedtime. Read a book, have a warm bath, talk sotto voce, rest.

In the case of tooth grinding, as with so many stress related conditions, you have more control than you know. You have to make an effort.
